We thought about it for years, yet never pulled the trigger.  After all these years as the top selling and most popular “Fish” model in the world, the “little disc” is now stretched out (and sleeked up) into our line of Mid-Length Mayhems.  It’s no secret that many of us who started riding fish in the mid-‘90s are now into our ‘50s, not surfing every day and distracted by life’s trials and tribulations. We’ve grown up…and now, our favorite board has grown up too.

Containing all the proven design details and DNA as the RNF_96, from which is “spawned”, the RNF ’96_KINGFISH features:

• Low entry rocker, for paddling through line-ups, ease in catching waves and plenty of glide, to take you where you wanna go, once you’re on one.
• Flattish deck, with full, down/soft rails, for floatation and stability. The flat deck allows us to stay relatively thin with the KINGFISH, keeping the deck-line curvy.
• Even the larger sizes are relatively nimble, flexible and forgiving underfoot.
• Balanced outline, with modest width in the nose and tail, which both measure the same width, on all sizes, retaining plenty of central curve in the outline, for turning.  The tail is still similar width to a shortboard and combined with the shallow swallow, it doesn’t feel “too fishy”, allowing real turns.
• Bottom contours are flat up front, blending to a single concave throughout the center, tapering to a double concave Vee, from the front fins, which accelerates to deep Vee, out the swallow tail.

The KINGFISH is designed to be ridden 6” (on average) longer than you would the RNF’96, although you can easily go shorter on the small sizes and extend longer on the larger sizes.  With this in mind, we

continued bending the tail rocker and scooping the deck out, as the boards increase in size, so although the board is longer, it doesn’t feel stiff and hard to turn. The nose and tail remain relatively thin and foiled in all sizes.  Like its predecessor, the fin placement on the RNF’96_KINGFISH remains and 2+1 set-up. Twins up front, with a small trailer, is how it’s built and designed to be ridden. The fin placement has been designed and tested to allow an open sweet spot, where you don’t need to be standing on the tail to turn this board.

Black Sheep Built boards begin with light weight, 1.5lb virgin EPS and utilize the most advanced “Triax-NCF” (Non-Crimp Fabric) high-quality carbon fiber, to create a fast, responsive and lively surfboard.  A board that is both lightweight and  flexible, but also surprisingly strong.

• “Triax” Carbon is laminated only on the deck, with a short bottom lap and sandwiched with multiple layers of 4oz, “D-size” fiberglass, top and bottom, for both durability and performance.
• •Engineered for rapid reaction and maintaining a forgiving flex and dampened overall feel, under foot.
• The combination of both Triax Carbon and fiberglass helps Black Sheep Built boards feel lively and exciting, but familiar at the same time.
• The unique performance of Black Sheep Built boards comes from the Triax Carbon, which combines a triple-axis +30/-30°/0 layup. It is an “un-crimped”, multi-directional carbon, which enhances and controls torsional force from rail to rail. Multi-axial carbon fiber is a great alternative to traditional woven carbon fibers because it is made up of alternately aligned layers of unidirectional carbon reinforcement.
• Because it’s not woven, the fibers do not “crimp” under and over perpendicular fibers, in the way that traditional woven fabrics do.  The fibers lay flatter, retain less resin, remain smoother, straighter and stronger, with a more natural flex.  Unlike traditional woven fabrics, there is also no 90 (degree) rail to rail carbon, which creates weak points and easy fissures for deck buckles, cracks and breaks.
• The +30/-30° fabric orientation, the torsion force and pressure from the surfer’s feet radiates outward to more of the rail line, creating greater drive, connection and thus control, with the edges and perimeter of the board.  Strength and stability underfoot and along the rail line, work together as one.

WARNING: Carbon Fiber surfboards can easily get Hot!  They’re dark…and like all things dark, they soak sun and heat up. The Black Sheep Built boards are made with lightweight EPS foam and a Carbon Fiber shell.

Black Sheep Built boards are a high end surfboard construction. Treat them that way.  Do not leave them in your car when shopping. Do not leave them in direct sunlight while bronzing on the beach. They will get hot and it is possible for them to overheat and bubble up. Protect and take proper care of your investment. We recommend keeping these boards safe in a heat reflective day bag. Take the bag all the way to the beach, if you plan to hang out in the sun, before or after surfing. If the boards do get dinged, let them dry out and fix them properly. With proper care and a little love, these boards will take the day to day bumps and bruises very well, remain light and extremely lively on the waves and provide hundreds of days of surfing enjoyment.
